Q&A
How did you get into film?
"I fell into a job working on feature films in NZ after finishing uni. It was a small cog in big machine stuff, so it lost its luster after a while. At the time a mate had just started his own production company and I thought it looked like a good time. I borrowed a Canon 5D, shot and edited a pretty average film around town but it went well enough for me to get the bug. Been making pretty average films ever since."
Best Ad Campaign Recently?
"Kathmandu - Summer Never Sleeps" by Daniel Warwick. It's quirky, creative and incredibly well-executed. I think what I like the most is that it looks like it would have been just as much fun to make as it was to watch. Big Wes Anderson and The Mighty Boosh vibes."
What film do you think everyone should have seen?
"The Matrix. It's timeless. Shame about the sequels."
What's your favorite TV show?
"Atlanta. It's genius. Rick and Morty. Also genius. True Detective Season 1.
Plans for the future?
"Keep learning, pushing and improving my craft."
Where were you when inspiration last struck?
"On holiday with friends - don't need to go into detail on what we were doing but it definitely made me think "damn, I could use this". Running is also my space for meditation and ideation."
What or who has most influenced your career?
"Taika Waititi - he showed us that people from our tiny country at the bottom of the world can really make big moves in this game and, as cheesy as it sounds, you can do it by just being yourself. And by working hard. And being a creative genius."
Tell us one thing about yourself that most people won’t know.
"I'm a big horror fan. There's nothing quite like the adrenaline rush that comes after you almost shit yourself."
